Route 62, Garden Route Tours, South Africa

Route 62 is a very popular road in South Africa leading to the town of Oudtshoorn. A few interesting stops and towns can be found along the way plus a variety of views ranging from dramatic mountains, farmlands and miles of flat plains. Most Garden Route tours include a visit to Oudtshoorn, meaning Route 62 forms part of the journey either on the way there or back. Route 62 gets specifically busy during the easter period when a very famous Afrikaans festival in South Africa takes place, called The KKNK. Finding accommodation in the area is extremely difficult and many Garden Route tours choose not to overnight in the town of Oudtshoorn during this period.

Coming from Cape Town, most Garden Route tours schedule a rest stop in the town of Swellendam. After that the road takes us off the motorway and we drive through the small community village of Suurbraak before reaching Tradouw pass - a mountain pass with incredible views and history. After a few kilometres on the mountain pass we reach Barrydale and the trip on Route 62 starts. Route 62 is the longest wine route in South Africa, and a taste of the local products might be included in some Garden Route tours.

Route 62 is a beautiful road leading to The Klein Karoo of South Africa and utilised on most Garden Route tours

Next to the Route 62 an unassuming, white little building might be noticed by some guests during Garden Route tours. It is only when you are much closer when you realise what the big red sign reads - Ronnie's Sex Shop. Some are shocked and some are amused, but it definitely isn't what it sounds like. It is purely a refreshment stop and farmstall run by a gentleman whose friends played a joke on him by painting the word 'sex' next to Ronnie's Shop. It became so famous that he decided the name will stay. Today he is a popular name in South Africa and hundreds of travelers on Route 62 and Garden Route tours taking this road makes a stop there.

For a more relaxed breakaway on Route 62, try the Warmwaterberg Spa. This spot is a natural hot water spring and provides lovely meals at their on-site restaurant. Those who feel like a dip can make use of the warm water swimming pools. For private Garden Route tours we can arrange for a longer stop at the spa.
