Taking the Overberg inland route during Garden
Route tours takes us very close to this town, and if
time allows we might even stop for a view or tasting. The town
was given the name of the first govenor of Cape Town, Simon van
started in 1688 by the French Huguenots who fled France due to
political and religious issues. They were welcomed in The Cape
by the Dutch and were given land in this area. They were highly
skilled in farming and wine production and they set the wine industry,
as we know it today in motion. Franschhoek can be visited during
daily wine tours or it can be included in Garden Route
tours as we head inland through the
Overberg on our way to the Garden Route.

the Overberg inland region. De Hoop Nature Reserve
is more than 34 000 hectares and one of the biggest natural areas
managed by Cape Nature. It is a popular spot for hiking, cycling,
bird and whale watchers. The park can be entered from the towns
of Swellendam or Bredasdorp. De Hoop is a specialized, requested
stop and can only be included on private or customized Garden
