Route Tours, Ostrich Tours in Oudtshoorn
we leave the lush, green forests of the Garden Route behind for
a brief moment we will notice the area and terrain surrounding
us are changing quite considerably. Crossing the Outeniqua mountains
bring us to The Klein Karoo and a popular town called Oudtshoorn.
This is a semi-desert area, and even though it's in total contrast
to the wet, green Garden Route it still forms part of hundreds
of Garden Route tours due to the wonders it holds. It is here
in Oudtshoorn where the Ostrich Capital of the world is found.
This basically means that the town is home to the highest concentration
of ostriches in world.
we enter the town from any direction one will start noticing an
ostrich around every corner. The ostrich farming industry here
is massive and the rich history of this specific ostrich farming
can still be seen all over town and in certain areas of the Garden
Route. In the late 1800's and early 1900's ostrich farmers here
became very wealthy in a short space of time. Ostrich feathers
were in high demand and called 'white gold' in those era's. Believe
it or not, but a kilogram of ostrich feathers cost the same as
a kilogram of gold! All over Oudtshoorn and The Garden Route one
can still observe the big, expensive farmhouses built by the ostrich
farmers. Today we refer to these houses as Ostrich palaces.
the feathers, leather and meat products create a huge income for
farmers. Ostrich meat is arguably the healthiest red meat you
can consume, being almost 100% fat and cholestrol free. If you've
never eaten ostrich meat, make time to order a steak with some
creamy mushroom sauce during our Garden Route tours.
Garden Route tours provide you with a chance to go on optional
ostrich tours and learn about the birds, the history and also
the myths around these strange creatures. There are many ostrich
tours and farms around Oudtshoorn so finding one is very easy.
Along with the ostrich tours you can also make some time for The
Cango Caves or Cango Wildlife ranch while in the area.
