Garden Route Tours, Birds of Eden in Plettenberg Bay

Birds of Eden have proved to be a must-do activity on any of our Garden Route Tours and is quite a unique attraction in South Africa and the world. Be it for the bird-lover, families or children, there will always be something to see, chuckle about or learn. This Birds of Eden sanctuary has become a well-known Garden Route stopover and in terms of bird spotters, a must-do!

The Crags is a small village found just before you enter Plettenberg Bay from Cape Town's direction in the Western Cape province of South Africa. This area is included in many Garden Route Tours and an optional stop on all our private Garden Route tours. It is here where a large number of wildlife activities can be found, including monkeys, elephants, cats species and of course, Birds of Eden. The popularity of animal encounters within this area has informally caused The Crags to be named 'Animal Alley'.

Birds of Eden is the largest free-flight bird cage in South Africa and the world. You truly forget that you are walking around in a cage as the size of it is very overwhelming and covered by the forest you are walking in. There are no guided tours at Birds of Eden and you walk around the park in your own time and pace. Trying to explain to guests on our Garden Route tours the beauty and visual entertainment is very difficult, but once they have had a walkthrough, it's difficult to get them out! Even people who are convinced they are not interested in birds leave the sanctuary feeling very satisfied and pleased for visiting Birds of Eden.

The variety of birds found in the park is vast. Any colour you can possibly think of can be found in Birds of Eden. Sizes also vary, from the smallest little feathered friend to the bigger Pelicans. The park provides a very handy bird guide book for sale to help you in identifying each and every bird you spot. The birds and animals found in the sanctuary are not specifically all from South Africa or The Garden Route area, so you are almost guaranteed to see something for the first time, and possibly the last time in your life!

It is difficult to set a specific time to spend in the park as different people have different interests. Some guests feel that 1 hour is enough, where others are barely half way after 2 hours. On Group Garden Route tours you will usually find that 1 hour has been set aside for this activity, but on our Private Garden Route tours you can basically decide on the amount of time you would like to spend in Birds of Eden.

The sanctuary have an in-house restaurant next to a beautiful lake where light meals and drinks can be enjoyed. Depending on how the timing of our Garden Route tours work, we can use Birds of Eden as a lunch stop. Toilets and resting benches are also readily available throughout the park, along with a beautiful curio shop where you can buy some Birds of Eden, South Africa and Garden Route memorabilia.

For the bird lovers, we insist on visiting Birds of Eden. Even those not so much into discovering our feathered friends we can almost guarantee the environment and colours will create a lasting memory. To ensure you get the time you want in the sanctuary, we suggest you look at our Private Garden Route tours in order to have the flexibility of as much time in Birds of Eden as you want.
