Cape Town Information

Like any country or city in the world, there are certain things and facts to know to ensure you pack the right clothes, plan the right trips, see the most important highlights and have the best time possible. Below you will find some Cape Town information and tips to consider when planning your trip to the Mother City of South Africa.

Currency
South Africa's currency is The Rand. It is important to have some Rands when traveling to South Africa as we are not so eager as other African countries to gladly accept foreign currencies. There are multiple foreign exchange agents at the airport or throughout the city.

Getting around
Taxi services are always available and quite easy to find. Most hotels and guesthouses will be able to call one for you. Unfortunately The Cape Town train system is not very user-friendly and for someone not familiar with it's operations it's better to avoid the trains. The same goes for minibus taxi's. Minibus taxi's are for people who knows specifically where to get off and find another connecting minibus to continue their journey. Minibus taxi's do not take you from A to B, they simply drop you as close to your spot from where you need to find the next way to continue. Car rental options are available but can be extremely limited during peak times. Finally, the My Citi bus system has been hailed as world class by many travel companies and can be compared to European standards.

Safety
South Africa is a country of extreme poverty, therefore crime is unfortunately used as a means to feed yourself and most probably the family. Pickpockets are always on the lookout for a target. DO NOT take out your wallet and count your money in a public area. DO NOT wear uneccessary jewellary, backpacks or oversized cameras in plain view. When using the ATM, make sure you are in a well-lit area and if possible, do not use ATM's hidden in dark, secluded areas. After sunset it is always better to move in, or with groups. Be aware of your environment and do not give pickpockets a reason to target you.

Weather
Below is a graphic with average tmeperature and rainfall found in Cape Town throughout the year and seasons. It is very important to ALWAYS have a jacket with you when doing outdoor activities in or around Cape Town as the weather can change in a heartbeat.

Areas in and around Cape Town
Cape Town city centre is small and it is very easy to get around. Surrounding the city centre you will find more areas and suburbs taking you closer to the beach areas. The Waterfront is a very popular tourist destination where accommodation, shopping, restaurants, bars and activities can be found. Here is a map pointing out the main areas in and around Cape Town.
