town of Oudtshoorn is found in The Klein Karoo, a short 45 minutes
drive inland from The Garden Route. It is in this town where we
find the Cango Caves which is one of the first and oldest tourist
attractions in South Africa. A visit to The Cango Caves is inculded
as a planned or optional stop in most Garden Route tours.
Cango Caves are roughly 25 kilometres outside the town of Oudtshoorn
and the drive there takes 30 to 40 minutes through a windy mountain
road. Along the way you will find a number of other interesting
stops such as Ostrich farms, restaurants and shops. The Cango
Caves, however is situated right at the end of this road, meaning
you cannot possibly miss it. Oudtshoorn and the Klein Karoo with
it's semi-desert environment are in exact contrast to the lush,
green surroundings of The Garden Route, even though it's less
than an hour's drive away. The reason for this is due to the mountain
ranges blocking the clouds from the ocean, and during many Garden
Route tours you will find the weather changing dramatically from
cool to very warm as we cross the mountains.
Cango Caves offer guided tours on a daily basis. Two options are
available which are very different in style and structure. The
Standard tours, or Heritage tours consist of a simple stroll through
the Cango Caves, where the Adventure tours are aimed at the more
flexible guests who doesn't mind crawling through tight spaces
and spending some time on their knees. It must be said that the
Adventure tours are quite demanding, and even though many Garden
Route tours include an adventure tour, you can easily ask your
guide to change it to standard.
Cango Caves tours are all lead and guided by experienced guides.
As standard, tours are done in English, but other languages are
also available, such as German and French. If you require a specific
language, it is of high importance to share this request in advance
with your operator or the guide on any of your Garden Route tours.
are available every day, except Christmas. The standard tours
depart every hour on the hour and lasts just over an hour, where
the Adventure tours leave every hour on the half hour and lasts
roughly 90 minutes. The Cango Caves complex is open from 9am to
4pm and provides free parking, a restaurant, bar, curio shop and
toilets. Unfortunately none of the tours are wheelchair friendly.
The Cango Caves maintain a temperature of about 19' Celsius throughout
the year. Bookings are preferable as some events in Oudtshoorn
and The Garden Route might catch you offside if you just arrive
at the Cango Caves without a booking. Garden Route tours over
the Easter and Christmas period must prebook their Cango Caves
trip as these are very busy periods.
Cango Caves are definitely a unique experience and provides visual
entertainment rarely found throughout the world. It is included
in almost all Garden Route tours from various operators.
