Botrivier is one of the many towns we find in the overberg when travelling inland to the Garden route on our overnight tours

Garden Route Tours through the Overberg and Botrivier

This small village, Botrivier is found in The Overberg as one takes the inland road on Garden Route tours. Hidden within the mountains of Houwhoek where the oldest hotel in South Africa can be found, en route to Hermanus along the Garden Route. The Botrivier works its way through a green valley surrounded by mountains covered in local, unique fynbos vegetation found mainly in South Africa, wine and farmlands.

A place used as a spot to cross in the Botrivier initially served as a area for bartering butter with the early Khoi-khoi tribes of South Africa and the river was given the name ‘butter’ from two cultures - the Afrikaners' word ‘botter’ and the Khoi's who named it ‘Couga’, which means ‘a lot of butter’. The Khoi tribes of early years gave a lot of names to places and areas within the Garden Route and these can be seen during our Garden Route tours. The name stuck and today the river meanders through the town to a big lagoon forming a marsh at the mouth. These swampy areas is the habitat of hundreds of waterfowl and one of the few remaining sites of wild horses is believed to live in the area. Botrivier has a tradition of accommodating travellers. The Botrivier Hotel was probably built in the 1890s and today serves as a stopping point of the Baz Bus hop on hop off transfer service that offers travellers of all ages a way to explore South Africa with a variety of Garden Route Routes.

Botrivier is one of many beautiful overberg towns found along the way as we cross the helderberg mountains on our Garden Route tours

A whole generation of South Africa were introduced to the town of Botrivier as the setting for one of the country's favourite and popular TV shows called - ‘Nommer Asseblief’ (which means 'number please') and visitors used to wish on experiencing the telephone exchange office and meeting the stars of the soap. Being close to towns such as Walker Bay and Kleinmond, Botrivier is ideal for travellers who want to escape the beaten track during whale watching season, but stay in the area for easy access. Botrivier is a true haven for the nature lovers, wine tasters and keen artists, and the sheer tranquillity of the setting means a complete escape from it all. Let us know if you would like to spend some time in Botrivier during private Garden Route tours.
